Top reasons Australia photos get rejected

  • 1

    Wearing eyeglasses

Fix: Remove glasses; switch to contacts if available

  • 2

Background not uniform or not contrasting with face

Fix: Use a plain white or light grey backdrop with diffused lighting

  • 3

Head too small in frame (typical phone selfie)

Fix: Crop so chin-to-top-of-head occupies 70–80% of image height

  • 4

    Smile or teeth visible

Fix: Neutral expression with mouth closed

  • 5

    Photo older than 6 months

Fix: Retake within the last 6 months

  • 6

Beauty filter or smartphone portrait mode applied

Fix: Use standard camera mode; turn off all enhancements

What is specific to Australia

  • ImmiAccount (the online portal) accepts a relatively large digital file β€” 70 KB to 3.5 MB. You do not need to compress aggressively the way you would for USCIS (240 KB) or Korea K-ETA (100 KB).
  • Australia accepts EITHER pure white OR light grey backgrounds, so a UK-spec photo is usually acceptable for Australia (whereas the reverse is not true).
  • Head size band (32–36 mm chin to crown) is the same as Schengen and UK; if you have a compliant UK or Schengen photo, the cropping is the same.
  • Australia uses the same 35Γ—45 mm format as UK and Schengen β€” a photo prepared for any of those generally passes Australia's dimensions check.
  • Australian citizenship applications use a different (printed) photo standard with witness endorsement on the back β€” those are NOT covered by this online check.
