Top reasons US OPT/EAD card (Form I-765) photos get rejected

  • 1

    Wearing eyeglasses

Fix: Remove glasses entirely and retake the photo. USCIS rejects even thin frames.

  • 2

Background not uniform β€” dorm room / apartment clutter visible

Fix: Stand in front of a plain white wall with no posters, no furniture, no other people. Stand 1.5 m from the wall to eliminate shadows.

  • 3

Photo dimensions wrong (using 35Γ—45 mm passport photos from home country)

Fix: USCIS requires 2 Γ— 2 inches (51 Γ— 51 mm) square β€” same as U.S. passport photo. Other countries' visa photo dimensions are not accepted.

  • 4

Beauty filter applied (very common with iPhone / Samsung default cameras)

Fix: Turn off Beauty Mode / Portrait Lighting / Filters in the camera app before taking the photo. Use a friend's iPhone if you cannot disable filters on your own.

  • 5

    Smiling or visible teeth

Fix: Neutral expression, mouth fully closed.

  • 6

Head too small in frame (taken from too far away)

Fix: Crop so the head occupies 50–69% of the image height. Use a phone tripod or have a friend hold the camera at face level.

  • 7

Photo older than 6 months / appearance changed

Fix: Take a fresh photo. If you grew a beard, changed hair color, or lost/gained noticeable weight, the photo must reflect your current appearance.

  • 8

Missing back-of-photo annotation on paper filings

Fix: Write your full name + A-number on the back of each photo in pencil.

What is specific to US OPT/EAD card (Form I-765)

  • USCIS uses the same 2 Γ— 2 inch square format as U.S. State Department passport photos β€” the specs are functionally identical. A photo that meets U.S. passport specs meets I-765 specs.
  • OPT applicants typically file online via myUSCIS, which has its own automated photo check that runs on upload. If the auto-check rejects, your application cannot proceed. Our check catches the same failure modes before you upload.
  • Paper I-765 applications require TWO identical photos, with name and A-number lightly written on the back of each photo in pencil. Online applications need only a single JPEG.
  • Glasses prohibition is strictly enforced. USCIS officers will issue an RFE (Request for Evidence) for glasses, adding 30–90 days to your application. Always remove glasses for I-765 photos.
  • Common dorm-photo mistakes: roommate visible in background, fairy lights or posters in frame, dorm-room beige walls (USCIS prefers true white). Step outside or use a portable photo backdrop.
  • If your photo passes our check but USCIS still issues an RFE, respond promptly with a fresh photo β€” RFEs typically allow 30–87 days for response. Missing the RFE deadline can result in denial.
